By Mike Siegler, CEO, Ecessa Corporation At two recent industry events Ecessa participated in – Channel Partners Conference & Expo and HTG IT Channel Summit – you couldn’t walk ten feet without tripping over vendors talking about security services or Software-Defined Wide Area Networking (SD-WAN). Meaning just about every vendor was offering their breakthrough solutions for increasing security or improving resiliency using SD-WAN. Keynote speakers called out SD-WAN as a core enabler of today’s modern business networks, with the same excitement they used to announce, “the Cloud.” With these observations in mind, I wanted to provide four key takeaways regarding SD-WAN technology, and what it is best, and truly, suited for. LESSON 1: SD-WAN HAS MATURED AND BEEN ADOPTED INTO MAINSTREAM NETWORK ARCHITECTURES. Carriers have adopted SD-WAN into their offerings as a must-have technology, as MPLS offerings are coming up for renewals and providing more options is necessary. Carriers are still not selling or deploying SD-WAN at a high rate, maybe because SD-WAN helps to integrate multiple carriers together – think agnostic integration. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS) providers are using SD-WAN to ensure reliability of their offering. However, they are positioning SD-WAN for VoIP and UCaaS applications only. This is good for their services but can cause confusion and be limiting for companies that want control over their other data.Manufacturers of firewalls and Wi-Fi controller are marketing SD-WAN solutions. Adding basic failover or allowing for dual WAN ports are basic forms of SD-WAN technology, but users are seeing apples to oranges comparisons in reference to SD-WAN. More clarity is needed about the exact performance these solutions will provide (e.g., active/active load balancing, packet level control, full duplication). LESSON 2: THERE’S NO SINGLE DEFINITION OF SD-WAN. As mentioned above, architecture and performance expectations are key; we see the three distinct architectures as virtual, cloud-based and premises-based. Just like broadband went from being an outlier to dominating service options, SD-WAN has moved from a niche technology for early adopters to center stage. If it’s not part of your network architecture yet, it will be soon, and meanwhile your infrastructure is missing out on all its great benefits. LESSON 4: SD-WAN IS SECURE AND HAS PROVEN ITS VALUE IN REGULATED INDUSTRIES. We see more and more financial institutions, banks and hospitals evaluating and deploying SD-WAN technology as it has demonstrated its capabilities and strength with resiliency and disaster recovery. As regulated industries apply more stringent security and performance requirements (i.e., PCI, HIPAA, GDPR, SOC-2 compliance), SD-WAN technology is already one step ahead, protecting and enhancing networks for these organizations. Acoustic coupler circa 1966. High bandwidth connectivity has come a long way since the days of jamming a rotary telephone handset into a giant modem. Today’s business networks are digital, complex and distributed. They demand more bandwidth than analog minds of decades past imagined. In this article, we’ll look at services offered along with bandwidth ranges, advantages and disadvantages. Types of Bandwidth Several classes of service exist for business communications; each class contains multiple service options. Because of factors including bandwidth, latency and throughput, some are better fits for specific business applications than others. The main classes are Public Wireless, Public Broadband, Private Networks and hybrid Software-Defined Wide Area Networks (SD-WAN). We’ve put together a summary chart comparing service options, bandwidth, cost and a few other features to help you coach your clients on which types of bandwidth are right for them. PUBLIC WIRELESS Long Term Evolution (LTE) cellular service, also referred to as 4G, and satellite tend to be more expensive than terrestrial services offering similar bandwidth. They may be the only option in areas cable providers haven’t reached with Internet services and existing twisted pair copper phone lines can’t keep up with data demands. Both 4G/LTE and satellite are shared services. They are sold in packages of up to 100 Mbps bandwidth, often with data caps, above which costs rise significantly. They can be viable failover options when used on a limited basis. High latency is an issue, particularly on satellite connections. The newest generation of public wireless, 5G, is currently only available in select areas. Keep an eye out for updates on this game-changing technology. If even some of the promises of 5G come to fruition, it will be a powerful option for business WANs. PUBLIC BROADBAND The term broadband is shorthand for broad bandwidth. These high-speed Internet connections are provided through either cable or telephone companies. Broadband Internet uses multiple data channels to transfer large quantities of information. Popular broadband services include Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), cable and fiber. Bandwidth offerings vary, depending on the service provider, with DSL on the low end (up to 40 Mbps), cable in the middle (up to 300 Mbps) and fiber offerings at the top (up to 10 Gbps). DSL and cable services are often asymmetrical, with upload speeds coming in significantly lower than downloads. The main benefit of broadband is its relative low cost for high bandwidth. Tradeoffs include security and reliability. A single public broadband connection is vulnerable to quality issues and even outages. When broadband quality suffers, Voice over IP (VoIP) calls drop and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) disconnects, which is unacceptable to most business users. On the other hand, business users may be fine with minor or infrequent outages because of the low cost of the service. Increasingly, businesses are leveraging multiple broadband connections with SD-WAN technology in hybrid networks to achieve efficiency and reliability. More on that fantastic opportunity later. PRIVATE NETWORKS As the name implies, private networks are not shared. They are sold through carriers as professional business services with Service Level Agreements (SLA) that include Quality of Service (QoS) terms. Because of this, contracts are significantly more expensive than best effort public broadband services and have lengthy contract durations (typically 36 to 60 months). Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a data-carrying technique for high-performance, private telecommunications networks. It leverages encapsulated data and is partitioned off from the public Internet, providing a secure transport mode. MPLS can use a range of access technologies, typically employing T1 (1.54 Mbps) on the low end and fiber or Metro Ethernet (up to 10 Gbps) on the high end. Before the availability of broadband services and SD-WAN technology, MPLS was the best way to ensure point-to-point connectivity and reliable network performance for real-time applications like video conferencing and VoIP. As with any of the listed services, a single MPLS link is vulnerable to outages. Microwave is a wireless private network service offering symmetrical bandwidth up to 500 Mbps. Extremely reliable in fair weather conditions, microwave is vulnerable to disruptions from rain, snow and low-flying clouds. Availability of services may vary in rural areas vs. urban areas and even in different parts of a city. Carriers in the same geographic area may offer different packages with varying QoS guarantees, contract pricing and terms. Businesses rely on you to help navigate the ins and outs of services available in their areas and match their needs to the best offerings. SOFTWARE-DEFINED WIDE AREA NETWORKS (SD-WAN) Certain SD-WAN technologies (including WANworX™ by Ecessa) make it possible for you to combine any services from any providers to create a resilient public/private network. There are numerous advantages to having two or more links to the Internet. Resiliency and protection against carrier outages. SD-WAN networks with two or more diverse connections can be configured to provide automatic link failover or to duplicate data over multiple connections. If one connection is lost due to a construction accident or carrier issue, data continues to flow across the undamaged link with no loss of data and no downtime. Compliance and security. Businesses in regulated industries can enjoy a secure network with reliable data, voice and video services without paying a premium for MPLS and multiple T1 connections. Leveraging multiple lower cost, high bandwidth public broadband links and applying SD-WAN features, such as data encapsulation and encryption, a stateful Layer-4 firewall, VPN, packet duplication, failover and other QoS features will achieve high reliability and security at affordable rates. Cost effective expansion of existing MPLS networks. For clients “stuck” in a costly MPLS contract, there’s hope! Supplementing a T1 or other high-priced service by adding lower cost broadband can be a huge win when it comes to throughput, business efficiency, failover protection and budget. For you - more revenue streams! What Type of Bandwidth is Right for Your Clients? It depends. Here are things to consider. How many people use the network?What do they use the network for? Are they accessing applications in the cloud? Retrieving information from a data center? Pushing large amounts of data out?Do they connect to branch locations via a wide area network (WAN)? How many locations are connecting?What core applications do they run and how bandwidth-intensive is each? For example, streaming 4K video consumes considerably more bandwidth than reading email.Is there an existing circuit under contract? Does it need to be replaced or combined with additional circuits for more bandwidth and network resiliency?What are the needs for security and compliance? Are secure virtual private network (VPN) connections between locations needed? Is it a regulated industry, such as finance or healthcare? Is sensitive information stored onsite or in a data center?What is the urgency of communication and what are quality of service expectations? How tolerant is the business to delays and outages? Does commerce grind to a halt?What is the budget?What services are available in the geographic location? The great news is, capacity abounds to feed bandwidth-hungry applications. It has been a few weeks since Convergia was at InnovaTech LATAM as an official sponsor in Santiago, Chile, presenting demos of IoT solutions with technology partners. We demonstrated that in the innovation ecosystem of the Internet of Things, connectivity is the gateway. Although this solution represents only 6% of the total market turnover in Latin America (*) versus 16 % globally (**), opening the way for the development of solutions based on customer demands, and bringing awareness to the operational efficiencies that IoT generates, produces new lines of business and improves customer experience. However, these statistics vary as time moves forward. The millions of connected devices or billing in exponential growth are indicators confirming that the opportunity within the market is great. In the local market for 2018, it is mentioned that there is a turnover of 168M USD, which will grow to 523M USD by 2022 (***). From our experience touring the market, we can affirm that we are in a stage of education rather than adoption, where industries such as mining, followed by fisheries and agronomists, are already progressing. For this, the different connectivity options offered such as GSM 3G / 4G, Sigfox, LoRA Wan (Low Power Wide Area Network Network), ZigBee (Low Power Digital Radio Signals for Personal Area Network) and satellite (a cheaper one than the other) points to different market segments depending on the volume of data required to transmit: GSM 3G & 4G: when the data ratio is very large (e.g.: CCTV, geolocation).LTE-M: when the ratio is less than 5Mbps (e.g.: traffic lights, logistics, payment methods).NB-IoT: when the ratio is less than 250Kbps (e.g.: vending machines, energy management in smart homes, parking lots, transport fleet management).LoRA WAN (LPWAN I): when the ratio is less than 10Kbps (e.g.: equipment monitoring, valves).UNB (LPWAN II): when the ratio is less than 600bps (e.g.: garbage dumps, doors, gas and water meters), the best example being SIGFOX network. It is said that with the arrival of 5G, the IoT will consolidate due to the high connectivity speeds that 5G will offer. As previously explained, most IoT solutions transport low data volume over extended periods. In this context, we believe that users can benefit from the increased availability of bandwidth in 3G / 4G networks, released by the adoption of 5G by the mass consumer market. However, the 5G network is going to make a difference for smart city as well as logistics and distribution solutions. This is because the volume of data generated is high, and the availability for decision-making occurs in less time, even more so with the use of Artificial Intelligence for analysis and immediate action… Connectivity provides the means through which the information collected by different types of sensors or digital reading devices travels. This information is sent to repositories, which can be on physical servers or in the cloud, the latter being the most used for several reasons: Convenience through accessVariation of developments hosted for analysis,Flexibility to increase storage in real-timeIt’s offered under a service model that allows cost efficiency versus the purchase of on-premise (physical) storage. At this point, we enter a very wide market of solutions that involve licensed software developments, sensors, communication gateways and management platforms. We can summarize that the IoT provides the ability to reduce the access times to the information generated by the connection of two or more devices, for decision making in real-time, generating benefits to the business and positively revolutionizing the customer experience. An example of the solution that each of the components of the IoT comprises is ‘Managed Wi-Fi (As A Service) with Analytics’. This solution is in high demand by shopping centers and retailers globally. But what exactly is this solution about? When the Public Wi-Fi infrastructure is mounted in an open or closed space, customers make use of it due to the need for connectivity (not all mobile operators in other geographies provide unlimited data plans, which is why Wi-Fi spaces in public are very important). We connect to Wi-Fi via a captive portal (where they ask us to register with one of our social media accounts, LinkedIn or through personal email) or via an application on Android or IOS (where we are asked to deliver information on our personal email and/or mobile number). In all these cases, the provider requests the user to read and accept the Terms and Conditions, where the scope of the use of the generated information is explained, and the personal information of the user is protected (according to the laws of the country). When the user registers and uses Wi-Fi, the provider can generate heat maps (also known as coverage maps) that represents the strength of the wireless signal in the different areas of the premises (For example; shopping centers, educational institutions, hospitals, retail stores, etc.). These maps allow the analysis of retail variables such as the number of people per zones in a given time (rush hour or opening hours of the premises), new visitors versus regular visitors, traffic patterns between zones as well as where visitors spend time between others. This improves customer experience because, with this information, the provider can optimize the areas of the premises, send offers and promotions in real-time from the different tenants to the clients, send important information to the clients, and even send internal security notifications. Therefore, here is where the biggest challenge for the provider lies; Generation of greater adoption to Public Wi-Fi while competing with unlimited data plans. This is achieved by analyzing and understanding the data generated for marketing campaigns, then offering promotions and/or exclusive offers for those who register for Public Wi-Fi. While this solution uses Wi-Fi as a means of connectivity (it does not use a mobile network or any other type of network explained), the Internet serves as a means of connecting and transmitting data to improve the customer experience. In conclusion, the Internet of Things (IoT) has no limits but should be used properly as it generates a high volume of data. Adequate tools are needed for the correct analysis of data as well as work teams with the experience necessary for decision-making, as IoT requires a large investment in technological resources and takes a long time to be implemented. Banking & Finance Compliance Challenges? SD-WAN Offers Solutions. Keeping up with customer demands, shareholder expectations and emerging technologies can be challenging for any business. Add government regulations, such as demonstrating disaster recovery compliance to regulatory bodies, and an IT professional’s job gets that much harder. Take banking and finance, for example, an industry layered with expectations and regulations – and opportunity. Deloitte’s Banking Industry Outlook 2018 predicts 2018 can be the year banks transform into “more strategically focused, technologically driven, and operationally agile institutions, so that they may remain dominant in a rapidly evolving ecosystem.” But the transformation won’t be easy. Banks are not only dealing with complex government regulations, but also legacy systems, new competitors, disruptive technologies and soaring expectations from their customers. Deloitte’s report identifies key areas of consideration to enable long-term growth. They all involve investments in – and careful management of – technology. Let’s look at two key themes: technology management and mitigating cyber risk. Management of technology resources at most banks is challenging, involving a collection of new and legacy infrastructure, operating systems, platforms, software and tools. When it comes to technology management, modernizing core operating infrastructure is imperative. Nearly a quarter of global banking respondents to a 2016 Ovum ICT Enterprise Insights Survey said that modernization ranked as their most important Information Technology (IT) trend. To achieve modernization in some functions, banks are relying more on the use of third-party resources to design, develop and manage technology solutions in the cloud. Other mission-critical functions, such as compliance and risk management, will continue to be maintained internally. Cyber risk is understandably a top concern for financial services risk managers. According to Deloitte, “The potential for cyber risk has been increasing with greater interconnectedness in the banking ecosystem, rapid adoption of new technologies, and continued reliance on legacy infrastructure designed for a different age.” The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, also known as the Financial Modernization Act of 1999, includes data security provisions to protect consumers’ personal financial information held by financial institutions. Other guidelines set forth by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) and the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) cover back-up and disaster recovery testing. At the core of these risks and opportunities is the network that connects it all. The operation of ATMs, online and mobile banking, cloud-based applications, data center functions and disaster recovery sites all hinge on robust, reliable and secure Wide Area Network (WAN) connections. To meet customer expectations and enable financial institutions to comply with government regulations, these networks must offer more bandwidth than ever, while maintaining security compliance. Many banks previously relied on Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) for secure site-to-site connections. For the bandwidth required today, adequate MPLS connections are often not available, or are cost prohibitive. Public broadband services solve the bandwidth issue but do not offer the same built-in security. That’s where Software-Defined Wide Area Networking (SD-WAN) fits in, establishing secure VPN connections across any service, from any provider. Stearns Bank is a financial institution based in the Midwest, with branches in Minnesota, Florida and Arizona. The bank struggled with getting enough secure bandwidth, while demonstrating complete disaster recovery compliance. “One of our data centers has limited options from a local telco. We were running on a bonded T1 at 3 MB and that wasn’t fast enough for even our day-to-day operations. Productivity was suffering because of speed,” said Jeff Nelson, Senior Network Infrastructure Engineer at Stearns Bank. Stearns Bank needed to add bandwidth in a way that ensured safeguards to meet the needs of its customers and satisfy banking regulators. Advanced Communications Consulting (ACC), the primary consultants and telecom service brokers for Stearns Bank for WAN infrastructure and telephony, recommended Ecessa. “With Ecessa’s SD-WAN solution we’ve gone from 3 MB to 90 MB while remaining 100% in compliance,” said Nelson. The solution also helps Stearns Bank meet guidelines set forth by the OCC and FFIEC for back-up and disaster recovery testing. “Our data centers talk as if they’re in the same building. According to a 2018 study, 61% of Exchange mailboxes deployed worldwide are still on-premises while 39% are Cloud Exchange mailboxes. The growth of Cloud Exchange mailboxes is exploding, so it’s a good time for any organization to evaluate how a cloud email deployment can help – regardless of what version of Exchange you are currently using on premises. What is happening? If you are one of the thousands of organizations still running Exchange Server 2010, this is even more important. Why? Because on January 14, 2020, Exchange Server 2010 will reach end of support. Exchange Server 2010, like most Microsoft products, had a defined lifecycle of 10 years. During that time, Microsoft maintained the product by making bug fixes, patches, and security updates. Applying these fixes on a regular and consistent basis kept your Exchange Server 2010 environment healthy, performing optimally, and, most importantly, secure. Why is it important to my organization? When these fixes are no longer available after January 14, 2020, your Exchange Server 2010 deployment will become vulnerable to any new exploit created by hackers. While a vulnerability like this is not unique to Microsoft or to Exchange Server 2010 (remember the 2016 exploit of Apple’s QuickTime for Windows?), it is an especially critical threat because email remains one of the most vulnerable parts of any IT infrastructure. In fact, 92% of all malware is introduced into organizations through email1. What should I do about it? Now is the time to act. Organizations need to start planning to migrate from Exchange Server 2010 to a current version of Exchange. For most organizations, this means a migration to Exchange Online – Microsoft’s hosted email for businesses (which is also included in most Microsoft Office 365 plans). According to a 2018 Bitglass study, over 56% of organizations have deployed Office 365 already. Here are some of the reasons to consider Exchange Online: Automatic Updates and Maintenance: Microsoft is constantly enhancing Exchange Online. New features become available automatically, and similarly, the platform is automatically patched and maintained by Microsoft. You can be sure that all of the secure infrastructure management is being done, your business can always take advantage of the latest features, and you will never need to worry about the “End of Life” of your Exchange environment again!Anytime/Anywhere Access: Because it’s cloud-based, users can access Exchange Online from any Internet-connected device. Robust security management features help you control and secure this access so you can enhance employee productivity while maintaining appropriate security.Large Mailbox Sizes: Every few years, Microsoft increases the mailbox size for Exchange Online. Today, Exchange Online offers either a 50GB or 100GB mailbox size. This capacity is significant enough that the majority of employees no longer need to worry about managing their mailbox size. (I personally have about 60,000 emails and attachments in my mailbox, and it’s only 10GB!)Enhanced Security: Every Exchange Online version comes with Exchange Online Protection – Microsoft’s built-in anti-spam and anti-malware protection. In addition, organizations can further enhance security using Microsoft Advanced Threat Protection (ATP). ATP provides an additional layer of protection with advanced filtering and sandboxing capabilities. So, there’s no need to buy, implement, and manage third-party solutions for security.In-Place Archive: Exchange Online Archiving provides advanced archiving capabilities. It also allows users to easily and automatically move emails to an archive folder, which is accessed right from within their Outlook profile. This keeps their primary mailbox small and fast, while allowing easy access to all email.Compliance: Exchange Online meets major compliance standards such as HIPAA/HITECH, SOC 1 & 2, and ISO 27001. Compliance is not configured out-of-the-box, though, so make sure you have a skilled compliance admin to help you. More information on compliance can be found here.Data Loss Prevention (DLP): With DLP, available in Exchange Online Plan 2, you can help keep sensitive information from leaving your organization. Whether it’s a Social Security Number, a credit card number, or other confidential information, you can easily set policies to block it. DLP enables you to flexibly engage with users to maintain the right mix of security and productivity for your organization. There are many other great features and benefits of Exchange Online and Office 365, too many to describe here in this short post. If you have not done so already, make sure your management and IT team are evaluating these great solutions. What if I need help? We get it, you have been running the same version of Microsoft Exchange Server for many years. Your team’s expertise is not planning for and executing email migrations, and you really only get one chance to do it right. IT can be pretty scary. Coast Central Credit Union (CCCU) serves members throughout the California Counties of Humboldt, Del Norte and Trinity. The area is largely rural, located along the far “North Coast” of California. At $1.4 billion in assets, Coast Central Credit Union is a key part of the communities it serves, with a total of more than 68,000 members, making it the biggest locally-owned financial institution. There are 11 locations in eight cities across the three counties, with two offices providing extended hours evenings and weekends. For many years, the North Coast community has had challenges with Internet service. Due to the remote location, most of the Internet infrastructure is located out of the area, depending on a handful of long-haul fiber connections to hubs further south that regularly go down. The result is a loss of Internet service for most of the community, as well as a loss of WAN connectivity to one or more Coast Central locations. One office is a full three-hour drive away from the main office often requiring the dispatch of repair support technicians. The staff at CSI were using an on-premise system to serve their vast customerbase. Each time their system required an upgrade, CSI was forced to buy an entirenew system and have it brought to their facilities. Thus, CSI’s staff had to routinelyreconfigure, reprogram, and reinstall their phone system when the previous hardwarebecame outdated. For CTO Eric Jaffe, it was beneficial to have the system localizedso that he could retain control over the company’s communications. However, itultimately proved difficult to make simple changes on the fly. CSI’s challenges spanned beyond the impracticality of having an on-premise PBXsystem. In addition to difficulties with the technology, CSI experienced poor customerservice and resistant billing personnel at their previous telecommunications serviceprovider. “In one instance, we were charged for a week of service that we didn’treceive,” Jaffe recalls, “and yet it took us two years to ultimately resolve the billingdispute.” Jaffe and the staff at CSI were distracted from focusing on their business goals whilemanaging an outdated communications system and constantly negotiating with adifficult provider. Tired of struggling with their phone system, CSI decided to shop fora new provider that could deliver a seamless transition from their on-premise modelto a cloud-based system. Recently Acquired TFB's Contact Center Software Solves Communications Challenges of Major West Coast County GovernmentNEW YORK, N.Y., April 20, 2016 -- Fusion (NASDAQ: FSNN), a leading provider of cloud services, announced today that it won a $250,000 contract to provide an advanced contact center solution to support the social services division of a major West Coast county government. The contract was won in partnership with an international IT solutions provider and systems integrator. The partner, which has been collaborating with Fusion's recently acquired TFB on delivering leading edge contact center solutions for more than twenty years, cited TFB's open architecture, standards-based technology and extensive suite of customized and user-configurable features for its selection."The government agency had serious challenges managing the peaks and valleys of call volumes in its day to day operations, and needed a solution that would drive significant cost and productivity efficiencies while improving service for its clients. In response, we delivered automated as well as scheduled callback, giving clients choices on how they wish to be contacted, and greater control over their experience with the agency," said Russell P. Markman, Fusion's President of Business Services. "This is Fusion's first implementation following our recent acquisition of TFB, and we are pleased to deliver a solution that will improve communications for this agency which delivers critical services to the population in its area."Fusion's contact center solution is fully redundant, with failover safeguards built in, allowing the agency to continue to provide call routing, queuing and distribution functionality to serve its clients even in the event of natural or other disaster. Call recording is an integral part of the solution as well, required to ensure successful outcomes, and to provide an audit trail in the event of incident. Of critical importance to the agency is the solution's user configurable interface for reporting and real-time monitoring, including dynamic filters, extensive permissions, and rules-based alarms, providing cradle to grave reporting across all contact center functions to provide an optimal client experience.
